Koto Kinabalu
The next stop in Malaysia is the tiny province of Koto Kinabalu in Borneo that still has orangutans and elephants in the jungle surrounding the 13,450 foot high mountain Kinabalu (sleeping women). We experienced two ends of this areas culture. A visit to the Monsopiad cultural village, named after a long dead headhunter, afforded us a view of how they lived 300 years ago. We were treated to several types of folk dancing with cymbals and drum music. We then made a visit to the House of Skulls. A warrior of those past days, to prove his prowess, masculinity and eligibility as a husband, had to go out from the village and return with a freshly acquired human head. The feathered warrior in the native dress can be seen giving Barbara the eye. He didn’t fully reveal his intent. Monsopiad, the chief, acquired 42 such skulls in his lifetime. A number of these are hung from a ceiling beam with their eye sockets looking up so their spirits don’t penetrate those entering the house. Con't on Port 17A
