Fortaleza, Brazil January 17, 2007

January 17, 2007
First, I should mention that due to head winds our Captain said it would not be worthwhile to stop at Beleme. So we had 3 days at sea! On Jan.16th we crossed the equator and of course had the appropriate ceremonies! We came into Fortaleza in the evening of the 17th. While many of this ships “Cosmopolitans” look down on Fortaleza as the Miami of Brazil, for us it was exciting to visit because of the dramatically choreographed “Urbie Bale Favela” translated as dance of the urban slums. A modern dance company called EDISA supported by One World Childhood has over the past 10 years brought preteen children from the streets into their studios to provide a dance life experience that promotes wider opportunities for life within this Brazilian city culture. Those dancers, sometimes 20 on stage, sometimes 3 in a group intermingling to convey the beauty of thrilling melodies through their body movement aided by face makeup, wigs, and colorful body tight costumes. It was held in the above theater, the pride of Fortaleza. You can see some of the dancers too. Afterward we were invited out in the garden where older dancers performed for us. Jim was chosen to dance with one of the girls!
