Port 26 Salalah, Oman April 2, 2007

1. Grave of Al Afif.
2. Fishing Boats.
3. Fruit Stand.
4. Mirbat.
5. Camels.

Because frankincense trees are principally found in the Salalah region of Oman it has been called the Perfume city. The burial site for the biblical prophet Job is 30 miles away into the mountains. Our tour took us along the coast where we saw lots of camels. It’s the first time I have seen camels with their babies! Unfortunately, we didn’t get that picture. Sometimes on the bus its difficult to get a photo, especially when the window is dirty! We did visited the tomb of Al Afif, also a martyred prophet. His tomb was placed in the ancient burial ground of his family.

What gave us a feel for ancient trading was a newly excavated elaborate site of the 500 BC village of Samhuram. This ancient capital and trading center for frankincense was built in a bay where a curving river flows to meet the ocean between separating bluffs. Then we stopped at a fishing village where only Omani natives can fish in the offshore Arabian ocean. Our next stop was at Mirbat, the 9th century capital and Dhofar trading harbor. Dhofar is the name of the region we visited.

Our last stop was at a fruit stand. There we enjoyed the juice in the coconut (through a straw) and ate what is called the jelly. Since our ship was leaving at 1 PM this was a short tour.
