Today was such a lovely day. The sun was shining, but the temperature was very pleasant. You can see the water from almost anywhere and there are many benches to sit on and enjoy the beauty of this place. It is so clean and well kept. Quite a contrast to some of the other places we have visited.
After the Vatican The Principality of Monaco is the smallest place in existence! It is one square mile for area, about the size of Hyde Park in London. The monarchy dates back to the 13th century as the House of Grimaldi. We visited the stately Palais Princier (palace) rooms with furnishings dating back many centuries. There is also a small museum of Napoleon in one room which we visited. Afterwards we watched the changing of the guards. The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception faces the Mediterranean on the cliff and holds the tombs of Prince Rainier and Princess Grace. Brilliantly planted gardens surround the buildings. The Palace du Casino is at the center of Monte Carlo, one of five regions making up Monaco. Besides the gambling rooms it holds the Opera de Monte Carlo.
